The Legion of Honour for USA
Carnage was avoided on Friday, August 21, in a Thalys train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris carrying 544 passengers as US military mastered a heavily armed man who had opened fire, a likely terrorist attack eight months after the attacks of January in Paris.
What happened in the Amsterdam-Paris Thalys ?
It was 17 h 50 when at least one shot was fired in the high-speed train Thalys 9364 near Oignies, in Haute Picardie. A "terrorist attack", in the words of the Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, avoided thanks to the "cool" and "great bravery," welcomed by the interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve, two American soldiers who were in the train.
Armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle with nine chargers, automatic Luger pistol and a knife, he opened fire shortly after crossing the French border. At first French traveler, aged 28 and employed in a bank in the Netherlands, tried to disarm him as he came out of the toilet. The suspect managed to escape him and several shots were fired, a bullet hitting a passenger, Franco-American nationality. Three young Americans, Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler (respectively 22, 23 and 23) helped by a British man in his sixties, Chris Norman, are then able to neutralize the suspect.
